Welcome to my artistic world!

My name is Matthew Clara, an acrylic painter focused on nostalgia in dilapidated structures. In the monotonous contemporary world in which we all live, decayed and forgotten buildings stand out very prominently for me. Foliage and new life has taken over these structures, engaging our curiosity in these real-life time warps. For me, encountering relics like old payphones or one-hour photo kiosks evokes a sense of our collective negligence of these once vital living space entanglements.

In my paintings, I capture the frayed aesthetics of these structures. I start with a monochromatic underpainting, using India ink and diluted pigments to create transparency and highlight my mark-making. This results in dynamic, chaotic depictions that emphasize the ever-changing nature of these forgotten spaces amidst urban sprawl.
